Evangelical Presbyterian Church Klefe History:

At the age of 12, Kwasi Dikro’s father allowed him to be taken to Ho for an education on condition that he would not be sold to white traders. At age 30, in 1901, he was baptized while in seminary and took the name Egmund Dikro. (In later life, he was commonly called “Papa”.) On a visit home in 1907, he met with the chiefs and elders in Klefe and convinced them that they must have a school. They enthusiastically accepted his advice and demanded he assist them. In 1908, Papa Dikro baptized the first Christian convert in Klefe. A mission house was established with the help of the Bremen Mission and also a primary school. Today, the public school in Klefe is actually a joint project of the E.P. Church and the community and is on church property. In 1950, when paramount chief Togbe Mama Dzaga IX was 70 years old and celebrating his own 50th anniversary, he was baptized, bringing religious tolerance between Christians and traditional religious followers in the community.

The whole village of Klefe (more than 5000 people, we were told) “jubilated” for the Centenary. They chose the theme from Psalm 118:17 “I shall not die, but live and proclaim the works of the Lord.” There were activities from Sept. 7 thru a Thanksgiving Service on Nov. 26. We participated in programs for 1 week. On Saturday evening, there was a church service in which 62 teenage confirmands answered questions prior to joining church. Seven couples celebrated the Christian blessing of their marriages. Uncounted numbers of children were baptized (there were 3 pastors baptizing simultaneously and I lost count) and elders were commissioned. The service was full of music and dancing.

It was an amazing experience, seeing how important the church and the faith are in this village. The occasion was a homecoming for many children of Klefe who live all over the world. They are so grateful to their founding fathers and mothers, and we met one of the last surviving daughters of Papa Dikro.
